Have you ever accidentally turned your phone on airplane mode without realizing it? Everything looks fine—your apps are still there, and your home screen hasn't changed. But the moment you try to send a text or load a page, nothing happens. You’re disconnected.
That’s exactly how some of us feel about prayer. We pray, we say the right words, we do all the things we’ve been taught to do… yet it seems like nothing happens. No answer. No breakthrough. No change. It’s like our prayers are stuck in airplane mode.
So what’s the problem?
The Problem Isn’t with God
John 15:7 gives us the key:
"If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you."
The issue isn’t that God isn’t listening. The issue is on our end. Just like your phone in airplane mode, everything in your spiritual life may look like it’s working fine—but if you’re not truly abiding in Christ, your prayers are disconnected from their source.
Let’s talk about how to turn airplane mode off in our prayer lives and experience the kind of prayer that moves the hand of God.
How God Defines Prayer
Before we get into the solution, let’s clear up some common misunderstandings about prayer.
Some people treat prayer like a ritual—just something religious to check off the list. Others treat it like a fire extinguisher—only to be used in emergencies. And some think of it as Amazon Prime—placing an order with God and expecting two-day shipping.
But prayer is not about repeating the same words over and over. It’s not just for when life is burning down. And it’s not a way to twist God’s arm into giving us what we want.
At its core, prayer is about relationship.
Philippians 4:6 says:
"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God."
God invites us to bring our needs to Him because He loves us. Just like a child isn’t afraid to ask their father for help, we should approach God with confidence, knowing that He cares for us.
But there’s a catch—our asking must be within the framework of abiding in Christ.
Why Some Prayers Don’t Get Answered
James 4:3 gives a straightforward answer:
"Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts."
In other words, some prayers go unanswered because they’re self-centered.
God isn’t obligated to answer prayers that:
Are selfish
Are sinful
Are out of His will
Biblical prayer isn’t about getting our way—it’s about seeking God’s way. Adrian Rogers used to say, "Prayer isn't the method by which man on earth gets his will done in Heaven. Prayer is a method where God in Heaven gets His will done on earth."
Even the Apostle Paul prayed three times for God to remove his “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7-9). And what was God’s answer? Grace.
Sometimes, God’s answer isn’t what we want—but it’s always what we need. There were times as a child my parents said I needed to be disciplined – it’s not what I wanted, but I probably needed it.
How to Pray Effectively
So how do we get out of airplane mode and start praying in a way that gets through?
1. Abide in Christ
John 15:7 says, “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you…” That’s the condition.
Prayer starts with a relationship. You can’t expect an effective prayer life if you’re not walking with Jesus daily.
2. Pray with a Clean Heart
Psalm 66:18 warns, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.”
Unconfessed sin hinders prayer. If you feel like your prayers aren’t getting through, start by asking, “Lord, is there anything in my life that’s blocking my relationship with You?”
3. Start with Worship
Before we ask for anything, we should first praise God for who He is. Jesus taught this in the Lord’s Prayer: “Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.” (Matthew 6:9)
Praise shifts our focus away from our problems and onto God’s power.
4. Pray in Jesus’ Name (and Know What That Means)
Jesus said, “Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” (John 14:13)
Praying in Jesus’ name isn’t just a tagline we throw on at the end—it means praying under His authority and for His glory.
5. Don’t Give Up
1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, “Pray without ceasing.”
Prayer isn’t a one-time event—it’s a continual conversation with God. Keep praying, keep trusting, and keep abiding.
How God Responds to the Prayers of an Abiding Christian
John 15:7 gives us an incredible promise:
"Ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you."
That’s not a blank check. It’s a guarantee that when we are abiding in Christ, our prayers will be aligned with His will—and God will move in powerful ways.
Think about all the times God stepped into impossible situations:
Moses and the Israelites—trapped at the Red Sea, but God parted the waters.
Gideon—outnumbered in battle, but God gave him victory with only 300 men.
Hannah—prayed in desperation, and God gave her a son, Samuel.
Paul and Silas—in prison, but they prayed and praised God, and the doors opened.
God still does the impossible. The question is—are we asking?
If you feel like your prayers aren’t getting through, it’s time to check your connection.
Are you abiding in Christ? Are you praying according to His will? Are you trusting Him, even when the answer is “wait” or “no”?
1 John 5:14 reminds us about effective prayer:
"And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:"
God sees your life.
God hears your prayers.
And God cares about your struggles.
So take your prayer life off of airplane mode and reconnect with the One who holds the power to change everything.
